In the campaign composer, the Audience card has three tabs: Simple, Advanced and Saved audience. Simple is the quickest — you choose one group from a dropdown and, for some groups, fill in one more detail.
Whatever you choose, patrons who cannot be emailed are left out automatically: anyone who unsubscribed or is marked do-not-email, anyone whose address bounced or who reported an email as spam, and anyone with no email address.
The groups you can choose
| Choice in the dropdown | Who it matches | Extra detail you can enter |
|---|---|---|
| All patrons | Every patron of this venue | — |
| Donors (have given) | Patrons whose lifetime giving is above $0 | Min lifetime giving ($, optional) — only donors at or above that amount |
| Lapsed donors (gave before, not this year) | Patrons who have given in the past but have given nothing this calendar year | — |
| Recurring donors | Patrons with an active recurring gift | — |
| Ticket buyers | Patrons whose lifetime ticket spend is above $0 | Min ticket spend ($, optional) — only buyers at or above that amount |
| By tag | Patrons who carry one patron tag | Tag (exact) — type the tag exactly as it appears on the patron record |
| Buyers of an event | Patrons who bought tickets to one performance, or to any date of one show | Occurrence ID, or Series ID (all dates) — see the note below |
| By location | Patrons whose address matches | State, City and Zip — fill in any of the three. Zip matches the start of the zip code, so 557 matches every zip beginning 557 |
| By custom field | Patrons whose custom field matches | The field, a comparison (is, is not, contains, ≥, ≤, is set, is not set) and a value |
| One household | Every member of one household | Search for the household by name and pick it |
Buyers of an event in Simple mode asks for the event's ID rather than offering a list of events. The ID is the last part of the address when you open the event in Admin → Events. It is usually easier to switch to Advanced and add the rule Bought a specific event, which lets you pick the event from a dropdown — see Compound audiences and saved audiences.
A patron who has only ever held free or comp tickets has a ticket spend of $0, so they are not in Ticket buyers. Use All patrons or an event rule to reach them.
By custom field only lists custom fields that are active for your venue. If you have none, the composer says "No custom fields defined for this venue yet." See Patron Custom Fields.
Checking the count
The Recipients card shows Emailable recipients — the number of people in the group who can actually be emailed. It updates a moment after you change the group. Export recipients downloads the full list, including the people who cannot be emailed and why.
Promoted event and exclusions
Promoted event (optional) is a separate card, above the audience. Pick the show the email is about and a checkbox, Exclude buyers of the promoted event, appears already ticked. Leave it ticked to drop everyone who already holds a ticket to that performance, so you do not send a "buy tickets" email to someone who already bought. It works with all three audience tabs.
One email per household
In the Send options card, tick One email per household to send one email to each household instead of one to each member. The email goes to the household's primary contact if they can be emailed, otherwise to the first member who can. The recipient count drops to match. See Households.
To combine groups ("donors who also bought tickets"), exclude a group, or save an audience to reuse, switch to the Advanced tab. See Compound audiences and saved audiences.
